RAS TEWELDE - BIOGRAFIA Già dall'età di quattordici anni, Ras Tewelde inizia a cantare con una band storica del reggae in Italia: la Living in the Ghetto Band. è una delle tre voci. Dal 1998 al 2002 si esibisce in tutta Italia, fino ad arrivare a partecipazioni a diversi festival sul territorio nazionale, tra cui il Natural Mistyc Reggae Festival 2001 ed il Rototom Sunsplash 2002. Intanto, nel 2000, si trasferisce a Perugia, dove inizia un’esperienza parallela formando la Ndujah Band, attuale River Nile. La passione per la musica Reggae porta ben presto Tewelde ad assumere una crescente consapevolezza del profondo messaggio veicolato attraverso le metriche della Roots Music, punto di riferimento continuo per la sua crescita artistica e, soprattutto, spirituale. E’questo il primo passo verso la conoscenza della figura dell’Imperatore Haile Selassie I, che occuperà sempre più spazio nella sua vita, fino a portarlo in Etiopia nel 2004, dove si accresce e si fortifica la sua Fede Rastafariana. Qui si battezza con il nome di Tewelde Birhane e collabora con un esponente della musica etiope contemporanea, Dawit Geletu, con il quale registra un brano ed un videoclip dal titolo Belsrà, nel quale, per la prima volta, propone il suo nuovo stile fatto di messaggi conscious e incalzanti metriche patwa. Nel 2006 avviene l’incontro artistico con Hobo e dj Nukleo, insieme ai quali dà vita al progetto Rasta Foundation. A Settembre dello stesso anno viene pubblicato il suo primo 45 giri, dal titolo 'Jah a di Teacha', che viene promosso in Italia, Germania, Francia, Svizzera, Spagna, Portogallo. E' all'inizio del 2007, però, che Ras Tewelde ha la possibilità di entrare in contatto diretto con lo scenario musicale giamaicano, grazie all'incontro con un produttore dell'isola, che lo porta a registrare al Tree Top Studio di Kingston ed a collaborare con importanti artisti giamaicani, quali Half Pint, Lutan Fyah, Teflon, Dean Frazer, Sly&Robbie, Bongo Herman, Scully Simms.. Tornato in Italia pieno di energie inizia ad esibirsi supportato da differenti sound system italiani ed europei. Al Rototom Sunsplash 2007, si esibisce sia alla House of RastafarI, sia sul Main Stage, cantando tra i concerti di Junior Kelly e Bitty McLean, dimostrando di essere all'altezza di un pubblico così numeroso e caloroso. Dello stesso anno è la sua seconda uscita su 45 giri, una potente combination con Lutan Fyah, registrata in Kingston Jamaica e prodotta dall'italiana GoldCup dal titolo Babylon is Fallin'. Il sempre più forte legame con l'Africa, porta Tewelde nel 2008 a cantare sui palchi di Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda ed Ethiopia, mentre prosegue la sua attività in Europa con una serie di produzioni internazionali, con gli spagnoli Rumble Infiny-t, con MacroMarco, con la stessa GoldCup e con Bizzarri Records. E' proprio insieme a quest'ultima, che dal 2009 Ras Tewelde inizia a lavorare più intensamente, soprattutto grazie alla collaborazione con Lion D, cantante con il quale si esibisce nel 'The Burnin' Melody Tour' su numerosi palchi in Italia, tra cui il Rototom Sunsplash e in Europa (Budapest, Amesterdam, Stuttgart). Parallelamente, Ras Tewelde svolge un'attività di ricerca accademica strettamente legata all'ambito musicale, grazie alla quale ha la possibilità di passare buona parte dell'anno tra Shashamane in Etiopia e Kingston in Jamaica, dove insegna a scuola e all'Università. E' anche autore di due pubblicazioni sulle tematiche Rastafari e sulla cultura e la lingua dei Caraibi e dell'Africa ('Forbidden Fruits' - Morlacchi Ed. e 'West of Eden' - Cambridge S.P.). Nel 2010 inizia a lavorare al suo primo album d'esordio tra la Jamaica e l'Italia con l'etichetta modenese Bizzarri Records ed escono i primi singoli 'Mama Africa' in collaborazione con Nitelite Production e cantato insieme alla crew africana trasferitasi a Pescara Jamafrica Crew, di cui è stato prodotto anche il videoclip; 'Everywhere I go', canzone da cui è stato tratto l'omonimo riddim e 'Mr Squadie' un singolo registrato in Jamaica insieme alla leggenda giamaicana Sugar Minott, scomparso poco dopo la registrazione. Il singolo, un rifacimento di 'Mr Dc' Il secondo videoclip uscito poco prima dell'album è 'You Cyaan Do Dat', un'altra combination con uno dei storici cantanti giamaicani dallo stile 'deejay style' Louie Culture, girato in Jamaica durante uno dei tanti viaggi intrapresi da Ras Tewelde negli ultimi anni nell'Isola. L'album 'One Way Ticket: Rasta at Home and Abroad' ha visto la sua uscita nei negozi a maggio 2011 insieme al videoclip della title track 'One Way Ticket', realizzato grazie ai filmati registrati dal cantante in Africa e in Giamaica, montati insieme a scene di finzione registrate presso l'Ethiopian Airlines di Roma: un video e un album che mostrano quanto la musica di Ras Tewelde sia una vera espressione della sua vita di Rastaman e di studioso delle tematiche rastafariane. Attualmente Ras Tewelde è impegnato nella promozione del suo album e nel tour estivo RASTAFARI CHILDREN TOUR che toccherà i principali Festival d'Italia, insieme a Lion D e alla Livity Band. ----------------------------- Ras Tewelde, born in Italy, started his artistic experience at the age of 14 with one of the first italian reggae band: Living In The Ghetto, where he was one of the three singers. From 1998 to 2002 he have been touring Italy, participating to several festivals, including the Rototom Sunsplash. In the years, he came closer to the Rastafari faith and ultimately the ancient land of Ethiopia. In 2004, Tewelde was for the first time in Mama Land, where collaborated with the singer Dawit Geletu in the song and videoclip "Belsrà", which remained for long time at the top of the local charts and was presented at the House of Rastafari of Rototom Sunsplash. Once back to Italy, Tewelde began concentrating on new productions, starting with his first 7 inch ‘Jah a di Teacha’, in 2005, promoted in all Europe. In 2007, he finally reach Kingston, Jamaica, where was immediately involved in the musical context, collaborating with great artists as Lutan Fyah, Half Pint, Teflon, Dean Frazer, Sly and Robbie and many more. In the same year, he released his second 7inch, 'Babylon is Falling', a powerful combination with Lutan Fyah for Gold Cup Records and then other singles like ‘Ruff Road’, ‘Overstand di Powa’ and ‘I-ses’. In 2008 the love for Mama Africa brings Tewelde on the stages of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Ethiopia, while continuing his activities in Europe with several talented european productions (such as Gold Cup, House of Riddim, Rumble Infini-T and Bizzarri Productions). During 2009 and 2010 he has been performing on many stages, with Lion D and the 'Burnin Melody Tour', in Europe and not only, backed by Livity Band and Bizzarri Sound. At the same time, Ras Tewelde is also engaged in academic research and he has the possibility to spend most of his time between Ethiopia and Jamaica, where he works in schools and I-niversities. It 'also author of two publications on the issues of Rastafari culture and language in the Caribbean and Africa (' Forbidden Fruits' – Morlacchi d. and 'West of Eden' - Cambridge SP ed.). In 2010, with Bizzarri Records, he started working on his first album, out on Spring 2011, which will feature the already famous singles ‘Mama Africa’, ‘Everywhere I Go’ and many important combinations, such as the Jamaican legend Sugar Minott and the DJ’s Josie Wales, Stitchie and Louie Culture and other rising stars from Europe and Africa, like the Italian Lion D or Sahara Benji, a youth from Shashamane, Ethiopia. There’s a message which is clear here, from titles to lyrics: the Continent of Africa shelters the roots of humanity, and Repatriation has to be the new Re-birth for Ethiopia. It is a Vision, vibrating in the essence of Love, with a constant spiritual link to his primary source of inspiration, Haile Selassie I and the land of Ethiopia. The road map followed by the songs is a spiritual and emotional journey from Africa to the New Ancient World across the Ocean and then, back again to Africa.
